Mating at the horses

First the stallion “tries”, i. e. he smells whether the mare is ready to breed. This is recognizable by the Flehmen, the complete pulling up of the upper lip of the stallion. This clears the way to the nasal organ, which is located at the base of the nose and is exclusively responsible for the detection of pheromones.
